WHO Delegation Reviews Ethiopia’s Polio Surveillance and Response Efforts
የዓለም ጤና ድርጅት (WHO) የልኡካን ቡድን በኢትዮጵያ የሕብረተሰብ ጤና ኢንስቲትዩት ተገኝቶ ጉብኝቱን ሲያካሂድ በኢትዮጵያ የሚከናወኑ የፖሊዮ በሽታ ክትትል (ቅኝት) እና ምላሽ አሰጣጥ እንቅስቃሴዎችን፣ የላቦራቶሪ የምርመራ አቅምን ለመመልከት እና ኢትዮጵያ ከፖሊዮ ነፃ የሆነችበትን ሁኔታና ደረጃ አጠናክራ እንድትቀጥል የሚያስችሉ የጋራ ትብብሮችን ለመገምገም እና ለማጠናከር በማለም ነው።
በልኡካን ቡድኑ ውስጥ በዓለም ጤና ድርጅት የአፍሪካ ቀጣናዊ ጽሕፈት ቤት የፖሊዮ ፕሮግራም አስተባባሪ ዶ/ር ጌዲ ሞሃመድ፣ የፖሊዮ ፈጣን ምላሽ ቡድን አስተባባሪ ዶ/ር ሉሳምባ ካምባባ እና በኢትዮጵያ የድርጅቱ ጽሕፈት ቤት የቴክኒክ ባለሙያዎች የተካተቱ ሲሆን በኢንስቲትዩቱ የሚገኙትን የፖልዬና ሚዝልስ ሪፈረንስ ላቦራቶሪ የስራ ሂደትና ማስፋፊያ ግንባታ ስራንም ተመልክተዋል።
የሉዕካን ቡድኑን ተቀብለው ያነጋገሩት የኢትዮጵያ የሕብረተሰብ ጤና ኢንስቲትዩት ምክትል ዋና ዳይሬክተር ዶ/ር መልካሙ አብቴ፣ በኢትዮጵያ የፖሊዮ መከላከልና ምላሽ አሰጣጥ ሥራዎች የተመዘገቡ ዋና ዋና ስኬቶች፣ ያጋጠሙ ችግሮች እና በቀጣይ ትኩረት የሚሹ አቅጣጫዎች ላይ ውይይት አድርገዋል።
ዶ/ር መልካሙ በኢንስቲትዩቱ፣ በዓለም ጤና ድርጅት እና በሌሎች አጋር ድርጅቶች መካከል ያለው ጠንካራ ትብብር ለክትባት ተደራሽነት፣ ለበሽታ ቅኝት፣ ለላቦራቶሪ አገልግሎት እና ለድንገተኛ አደጋ ምላሽ ሥራዎች መሻሻል ከፍተኛ አስተዋጽኦ ማበርከቱን ገልጸው፣ የcVDPV2 ስርጭትን ለመቆጣጠር የተደረጉ ጥረቶችን እና የተመዘገቡ እድገቶችን አንስተዋል።
እነዚህን አዎንታዊ ውጤቶች ለማስቀጠልና ለማጎልበት መደበኛ የክትባት ፕሮግራሞችን እንዲሁም የተቀናጀ በሽታን የመከታተልና የምላሽ አሰጣጥ ሥርዓትን ይበልጥ ማጠናከር እንደሚገባ፣ በተለይም ያልተከተቡና በቂ ክትባት ያላገኙ ሕፃናትን በሩቅ፣ አገልግሎት አስቸጋሪ በሆኑ እንዲሁም የድንበር አካባቢዎች ማድረስ እንደሚገባ አስገንዝበዋል።
በተጨማሪም ምክትል ዋና ዳይሬክተሩ የላቦራቶሪ፣ የጂኖሚክና የአካባቢ ክትትልን ከመደበኛ ክትባትና የአደጋ ምላሽ ጋር ማቀናጀት፣ የላቦራቶሪ አቅምን በክልል ደረጃ ማሳደግ እና የናሙና ማጓጓዣ ስርዓቱን ማፋጠን እንደሚያስፈልግ ገልጸዋል።
የዓለም ጤና ድርጅት የልኡካን ቡድን በበኩሉ የኢንስቲትዩቱን ብስለት የተሞላበት አመራር ያደነቀ ሲሆን፣ በላቦራቶሪ አቅም፣ በበሽታ ቅኝትና በፈጣን ምላሽ አሰጣጥ ሥርዓቶች ላይ ያለውን ድጋፍና ትብብር ለማጠናከር ያለውን ቁርጠኝነት አረጋግጧል።
ይህ የጋራ ውይይት በዘርፉ ያሉ ክፍተቶችን በመሙላት የኢትዮጵያን ከፖሊዮ ነፃ የመሆን ደረጃ እና አጠቃላይ የማህበረሰብ ጤና ደህንነትን ለማረጋገጥ ያለውን የጸና ቁርጠኝነት ያሳየ ነው።
የኢትዮጵያ የሕብረተሰብ ጤና ኢንስቲትዩት ኢትዮጵያን ከፖሊዮ ነፃ የመሆን ደረጃ ለማስቀጠል ያለውን ቁርጠኝነት በማረጋገጥ፣ ቀጣይነት ያለው ስኬት የጠንካራ አጋርነት፣ ዘላቂ ኢንቨስትመንት፣ የተቀናጀ የሀብት ማሰባሰብና የጋራ እርምጃ ውጤት እንደሚሆን ያላቸውን እምነት ገልፀዋል።
WHO Delegation Reviews Ethiopia’s Polio Surveillance and Response Efforts
A delegation from the World Health Organization (WHO) visited the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) to review Ethiopia’s polio surveillance and response activities, assess laboratory diagnostic capacity, and strengthen collaboration to sustain the country’s progress toward a polio-free future.
The delegation included Dr. Gedi Mohammed, WHO Regional Office for Africa Polio Programme Coordinator; Dr. Lusamba Kambaba, Polio Rapid Response Team Coordinator; and technical experts from the WHO Ethiopia Country Office.
Dr. Melkamu Abte, Deputy Director General of EPHI, and his leadership team welcomed the delegation for discussions on achievements, challenges, and priorities.
Dr. Melkamu highlighted the strong partnership between EPHI and its national and international partners, which has contributed to improvements in vaccination coverage, surveillance, and outbreak response, including efforts to control circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2).
He emphasized the need to sustain these gains by strengthening routine immunization and surveillance, particularly by reaching zero-dose and under-immunized children in underserved, hard-to-reach, and border communities. He also called for stronger cross-border collaboration to improve immunization and surveillance among mobile and border populations.
Dr. Melkamu further stressed the importance of integrating laboratory, genomic and environmental surveillance with routine immunization and emergency response, while expanding subnational laboratory capacity, improving specimen transportation, and reducing the turnaround time for genomic sequencing and laboratory results.
The WHO delegation commended EPHI’s leadership and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening laboratory capacity, surveillance, and rapid response systems. Dr. Melkamu also called on WHO and partners, including Gavi, GPEI, CDC, and others, to mobilize resources and address remaining operational and capacity gaps.
Reaffirming EPHI’s commitment to maintaining Ethiopia’s polio-free status, Dr. Melkamu emphasized that continued progress will depend on strong partnerships, sustained investment, coordinated resource mobilization, and collective action.
